PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s Jazeman Jaafar is beginning to make his presence felt in the prestigious Formula Renault 3.5 series after chalking up a second third-placed finish for the season.
Jazeman produced an accomplished drive to follow up on his podium success in Monaco last week with another third placing in Spa over the weekend, racing through the field from a 14th-placed start.
Apart from the podium outcome in the opening race, Jazeman was sixth in the second and the 21-year-old now lies sixth in the overall championship with 46 points.
“We still have some work to do to improve the car but we are heading in the right direction and are now starting to show the level of performance which I know is achievable.
“After two races in a row, it’s a shame I have to wait three weeks now. I’m itching to continue with the work and keep developing the car,” said Jazeman, who added that he never would have predicted a podium finish after qualifying so low on the grid.
Spaniard Carlos Sainz Jr, the son of former world rally champion Carlos Sainz, won both races in Spa to lead the championship with 124 points.
“I’m really pleased with these two results. We had to work very hard to achieve these results but persistence pays off. I wouldn’t have predicted being on the podium but, holding your nerve, fearless driving and being able to put the power down when we needed to, produced a great result.
“The drive to sixth in the second race was also good, especially as I so nearly got caught up in the incident between two other drivers, which would probably have ended my race.
“But I did get held up by these two, so lost ground to the front runners and did not have the pace of Saturday to be able to catch them.”
Jazeman will return to action in the fifth round in Moscow in three weeks’ time.
