PETALING JAYA: Malaysian Moto2 rider Hafizh Syahrin Abdullah will have to prove that he is a quick learner if he is to do well in the second round of the MotoGP world championships at Austin, Texas, on Sunday.
This will be the first time that Hafizh and his Petronas Raceline Malaysia team will race in Austin in the Grand Prix of the Americas.
Although he collected his first point of the season at the Losail International Circuit in Qatar last month, things could get difficult this weekend.
Team manager Barry Leong said that without any data on the track, it would be very difficult for the team and Hafizh to put up a good show.
“We will have to learn the track as fast as possible and fully utilise the time we have. We will have to be very effective indeed.
“It won’t be easy to continue collecting points but, more importantly, Hafizh needs to finish the race and avoid any mishaps,” said Barry.
Hafizh managed to collect a point in Qatar after second-placed Takaaki Nakagami of Japan was disqualified for a technical infringement. Hafizh, who finished 16th in the race, was promoted to 15th spot.
“He is still new to the championship and the lack of experience on some of the tracks, like Austin, could be a setback,” said Barry.
Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman will also be racing in the Moto2 in Texas under the Idemitsu Honda Team Asia banner.
Zulfahmi Khairuddin (Ongetta AirAsia) and Amirul Hafiq Azmi (SIC-Ajo) will fly the Malaysian flag in Moto3.
