PETALING JAYA: Mohd Zaqhwan Zaidi has established himself as the man to beat in Round One of the Petronas AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championships.
The Givi Honda Yuzy Racing rider set a blistering lap of 53.333 seconds on Saturday to lead the CP130 practice sessions at the Batu Kawan Stadium in Penang.
Petronas Yamaha-CKJ’s Mohd Affendi Rosli was 0.228 seconds behind in second place. Third fastest was Motul Yamaha YY Pang’s Mohd Azhar Abdul Jalil in 53.591 followed by Ahmad Afif Amran in fourth in 53.720.
“We had a very positive test despite some difficulties setting up the bike in the morning practice,” said Zaqhwan, who finished third overall last season.
Speaking about his expectations of getting pole on Sunday, Zaqhwan said: “Starting in the front row is crucial on the narrow tracks of Batu Kawan. I just hope to avoid making any mistakes that can hurt my podium chances.”
In the CP115 practice sessions, Mohd Izzat Zaidi Salehan set the quickest time. The Motul Yamaha YY Pang rider clocked 54.246 while Elly Idzlianizar Ilias of M-Seki Liberty Honda was second in 54.415s.
Tengku Amirul Haffiruddin, also of Motul Yamaha YY Pang, was third in 54.561.
