PETALING JAYA: Motorcycling fans are in for a double treat this Saturday as the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) takes the unprecedented move of putting together two exciting endurance events which include a newly-created superbike race, T-180.
Featuring bikes in the 1,000cc category, the T-180 3-Hour Endurance Race is SIC’s first venture into superbike endurance racing and it will be groomed to become an international event and join the likes of the Suzuka 4-Hour Endurance.
“We already have the MMER (Malaysia Merdeka Endurance Race) and the S1K (Sepang 1000KM) in the car categories. Thus, it is time for a bike endurance race in Malaysia, catering to participants in this region.
“We are looking at the T-180 to grow to the same level as the endurance race in Suzuka, Japan. Naturally, being the first year, we don’t expect to have a huge number of entries this weekend. But, I am confident it will grow big – just like the MMER, S1K and the Malaysian Super Series.
“Our intention is to build this race, help it grow and attract more participants and spectators in the future for it to be at the same level as all bike endurance races around the world,” said SIC chief executive officer Datuk Razlan Razali.
For the inaugural T-180 3-Hour Endurance, which is the first race event held at the circuit for 2014, SIC has so far confirmed eight teams participating with 16 riders including those from South-East Asia.
Meanwhile, the KBS MAM National Kapcai Endurance Championship Grand Finals featuring underbone bikes under 150cc and celebrating its second edition, is already a favourite event amongst grassroot teams and riders especially in view of its lucrative rewards.
The top winners of the KBS MAM National Kapcai Endurance Championship will be vying for automatic slots at the SIC Ninja 250 Cup, which in turn is the passport for young riders to compete in the Spanish National Championship in Spain.
For the race programme, the T-180 3-Hour Endurance will run their free practice and qualifying sessions on Friday morning while the 311 entries to run the KBS MAM National Kapcai Endurance Championship will have the free practice and qualifying sessions on Friday afternoon.
The T-180 3-Hour Endurance will feature a two-rider team competition in the 1,000cc category and the KBS MAM National Kapcai Endurance allows a participation of up to four riders to a team in a competition of three classes – under 100cc, 120cc and 150cc.
Both races will feature the “Le Mans” style starting grid and start procedure with the motorcycles lined up behind the starting line along the pit wall and riders running to their machines at the start.
