PETALING JAYA: Despite globe-trotting in Europe for the past three years as a motorcycle racer, Moto3 rider Amirul Hafiq Azmi is just a shy 17-year-old.
Speaking to him would quickly register that Amirul is not the kind who would burst into a loud giggle in public as he is the reserved kind.
But this personality has not stopped him from becoming a hard and determined rider when he’s on a two-wheel machine. Amirul is already set to compete in the Moto3 World Championship next season with Avant Tecno team, a satellite team run by Ajo Motorsport.
It was Ajo Motorsport who groomed the first Malaysian Moto3 rider Zulfahmi Khairuddin to finished a creditable seventh overall in 2012 under the Red Bull KTM Ajo banner.
Amirul started his foray in international bike racing when he enrolled in the Red Bull Rookies programme in 2011.
After two years with the programme, Sepang International Circuit – with the help of Ajo Motorsport _ initiated a move to put Amirul in the Spanish National Championships where the level of competition is much higher.
“I’m glad that my learning curve went well. Of course results were far from impressive in the Spanish Championships but I learnt a lot there,” said Amirul, who finished the Spanish season in 17th spot with 24 points.
Despite a daunting task to impress the team management, Amirul is keen on giving his best in the world championship which will start on March 23 with the Qatar Grand Prix.
“As always, the objective in the first season in any championship is to learn as much as possible. But I would also like to finish in the points in every race.
“I think being a rookie in the world championship will suit me fine because I will be under the radar. That will allow me to play it cool during the season,” he said.
