Alex Yoong won Round Nine and finished second in the following round in the Audi R8 LMS Cup in Shanghai.
PETALING JAYA: Former Malaysian Formula One driver Alex Yoong tightened his grip on the Audi R8 LMS Cup as he took two podium finishes in Round Nine and 10 in Shanghai.
Alex won Round Nine and finished second in the following round on Sunday to extend his lead at the top by 24 points over China’s Adderly Fong in the standings. Alex has amassed 186 points after 10 rounds. Adderly sits second on 162 points while Marchy Lee of Hong Kong is third on 146 points.
It was a brilliant race for pole man Alex in Round Nine as he led from start to finish to take victory.
However, he made a mistake at the start of Round 10 as Swiss driver Rahel Frey made a brilliant manoeuvre to overtake him from second position to win the race.
Alex was already thinking about the title as he let Frey pass him as closest rival Adderly was in fifth position – a situation that would have given Alex the overall title. However, it all changed when Adderly moved up to eventually finish fourth.
“I could see in my mirror that Adderly was fifth and after doing a little math, I thought ‘Great I am champion’. Then he was fourth and I thought ‘No I am not’. My start was not great and I was fortunate not to fall too far behind. I was hoping Rahel would make a mistake but she drove well too,” said Alex.
The championship goes to Macau on Nov 9 and 10 for the finale.
