PETALING JAYA: Newly-crowned Wira champion Mohd Hafiza Rofa was almost lost for words after bagging the title in Round Eight of the Petronas AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championships in Jempol, Negri Sembilan, on Sunday.
The Warner-Pumps YSP rider finished the race in second place behind Mohd Adam Norrodin but it was enough to land him the title on an unassailable 171 points. Mohd Syafiq Rosli (Hyperspeed YAM Racing) is currently second on 103 points with two more rounds to go.
It was Hafiza’s first major title since he moved to the championship in 2010 when he finished second overall in the Honda icon series.
This year, he enjoyed a successful season with six pole positions, 11 podium finishes and four wins.
“I almost didn’t believe it when the team signalled I had won the championship at the end of the race. The feeling was just amazing,” said Hafiza.
“Credit to the team for all their hard work preparing a competitive bike throughout this season. Also, I would like to extend my thanks to my family and fans who have supported me through thick and thin.”
The title was handed to Hafiza after Syafiq crashed out of Sunday’s race. Before the race, Syafiq was the only rider capable of toppling Hafiza from the top of the standings.
“The aim was to win the race. But when I saw Syafiq crashed, I just played it safe because I thought completing the race with points in the bag is better than crashing out with zero points. But I really didn’t expect to win the title,” said Hafiza.
The penultimate round of the championships will take place at the Sepang International Circuit (South) on Nov 16 and 17.
