PETALING JAYA: Despite still nursing a fractured collarbone sustained at the Malaysian Grand Prix in Sepang recently, Mohd Zaqhwan Zaidi set a blistering pace to top the CP130 practice session in the Petronas AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championships in Jempol, Negri Sembilan, on Saturday.
The Givi Honda Yuzy Pachie rider set the fastest time of 49.396 seconds, ahead of Norizman Ismail (Harian Metro Y-TEQ SCK Honda) who was second in 49.408.
Third fastest was Norizman’s team-mate, Elly Idzlianizar Ilias at 49.396.
“This is the sixth time I was fastest in practice this season and I consider it quite an achievement,” said Zaqhwan, who broke his collarbone while racing in the Moto2 class in the Malaysian Grand Prix as a replacement rider.
“However, I need to perform well in the qualifying tomorrow because the track is narrow and overtaking would be difficult.”
Meanwhile, Fakhrusy Syakirin Rostam of MAZ Racing was fastest in the CP115 class with a time of 50.421, ahead of Mohd Izzat Zaidi Salehan (Motul Yamaha YY Pang) in 50.593 while Ahmad Afif Amran (Petronas Yamaha-CKJ) was third in 50.712.
“I don’t think we are fast enough because Afif had a better time this morning. Maybe luck was on our side because he could not repeat the same pace in the afternoon,” said Fakhrusy.
