Afiq Yazid Ikhwan finished second behind Thailand's Tanart Sathienthirakul in Race 16 of the Formula Masters China Series at the Shanghai International Circuit.
PETALING JAYA: Afiq Yazid Ikhwan kept alive his title hopes by mounting the podium in the season’s title-deciding round of the Formula Masters China Series at the Shanghai International Circuit.
Afiq finished second behind pole-sitter Tanart Sathienthirakul of Thailand in Race 16, but there was no cheer for another Malaysian – Akash Nandy, of Cebu Pacific Air KCMG, who only finished ninth.
Afiq’s Meritus GP team-mate Aidan Wright, who is leading the series, finished sixth to pave the way for Afiq to narrow the gap on the Australian to just one point on 183 points.
Second-placed Afiq now has 183 points and can wrest the title if he stays ahead of the Australian in the remaining two races.
Akash’s setback means that the 16-year-old remains a distant third on 159 points.
