PETALING JAYA: Veteran rider Ahmad Fuad Baharudin will be doing double duty at this weekend’s Petronas AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship in Jempol, Negri Sembilan.
Not only will he be vying for this season’s CP130 crown, Fuad will also be introducing his own racing team in Jempol.
His team, Permata Budimas AFB Tech, will compete in the Wira class and feature youngsters Saiful Izman Ahmad Zamani (his nephew) and Kasma Daniel Kasmayuddin.
Fuad is the team owner while his younger brother, Ahmad Nashrul Baharudin, a former Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC) rider, is the team manager.
“The plan to start a cub prix team and develop the next generation of riders came to us a while back but we lacked financial support. It wasn’t until about a month ago that we got a firm commitment from our sponsors ... and here we are today,” said the 34-year-old Fuad.
“I’ve been racing for 15 years, I will eventually retire. I need to plan for the future ... setting up this team is a step towards my retirement. That’s how Mohd Rosnizam Mohd Noor, Soong Chee Kieong, Yong Yin Hoe and Shahrol Yuzy became team managers.”
He also explained the rationale behind introducing his team with just three more rounds left to the season.
“For us, these three rounds are very important because we’ll get to learn how to set up the bike, train the riders and, once the new season starts, the team will be ready,” said Fuad.
