PETALING JAYA: Birthday boy Zulfahmi Khairuddin picked up five valuable points in Moto3 when he finished 11th in the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island on Sunday.
Zulfahmi, who turned 22 yesterday, started ninth on the grid but dropped to 11th as the race progressed. He clocked 37:56.349, 15.974 seconds adrift of winner Alex Rins of Spain.
It was a relief for Zulfahmi to complete the race, having pulled out of the previous leg in Malaysia due to unbearable pain to his injured right wrist.
With the five points, Zulfahmi remains in 10th spot in the overall standings with 65 points. KTM Red Bull team-mate Luis Salom, who finished third yesterday, leads with 300 points.
“I had a reasonably good start, but on the fourth corner of the first lap there was a crash in front of me and a large group of riders almost stopped.
“I got back to the leading group, but then the others began overtaking and I lost ground.
“The positive thing is that I’ve recovered physically, so I want to thank the doctors and physiotherapists.
“Also I need to thank the team because the bike worked very well and the times were what we wanted.
“Looking ahead to the next races, I have to improve my first lap to keep with the front group and be more prepared for the race.
“I hope to be just as strong in Japan.”
The next race is in Motegi this weekend before the final round in Valencia, Spain, from Nov 8-10.
Amirul Haziq Mohd Azmi was the other Malaysian Moto3 rider who competed in Australia yesterday. Amirul Haziq, a replacement rider for the La Fonte-Tascaracing-Honda team, clocked 39:14.112 to finish 29th.
In Moto2, Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman completed the 13-lap race for Team Honda Asia in 20:56.318. He finished 19th.
