Fakhrusy Syakirin Rostam, 17, is one of the six Malaysian teenagers chosen to make the grid of the Shell Advance Asia Cup Talent.
SEPANG: Six young Malaysian riders have earned a chance of possibly hitting the trail to the FIM World Motorcyle Championships in the near future.
The six – Nazirul Izzat Muhd Bahauddin (aged 13), Muhd Shafiq Rasol (aged 16), Muhd Adam Mohd Norrodin (aged 15), Muhd Helmi Azman (aged 13), Fakhrusy Syakirin Rostam (aged 17) and Mohd Shafiq Ezzariq (aged 13), are among the 22 lucky ones selected to make the grid of the Shell Advance Asia Cup Talent, which is the feeder series in Asia for the FIM World Motorcycle Championship.
The selection process to decide the grid of the inaugural series starting next year ended at the Sepang Circuit on Wednesday.
The six-round championship takes flight with the first round taking place at the Qatar round of the 2014 MotoGP season and the winner could earn a spot in either the Moto2 or Moto3 categories of the World Motorcyle Championships.
The other stops are in Indonesia (Sentul), China, Japan (Motegi), Malaysia (Sepang Circuit) and in India (Buddh Circuit).
Another Malaysian Muhd Ibrahim Mohd Norrodin, 13, is listed as one of the three reserve riders and there is one girl who made it through to the final 22 as well – 19-year-old Muklada Sarapuech from Thailand.
A total of 108 riders from nine different countries (China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and the Philippines) took to the Sepang kart circuit for two days on 125cc Honda Future underbone bikes, watched closely by renowned talent scout Alberto Puig.
Puig said it was great to see riders from so many countries making their way for the selection process.
“They all improved their times, heat after heat, It was a good selection process and we are happy. It’s never easy to select riders. There’s no science for this ... it’s just your perception of the situation after doing this for many years now.
“So, I based the decisions on my intuition as well as on the lap times. If the lap times are also on the same level as your thoughts, then you have the perfect combination,” said Puig, who discovered the likes of MotoGP stars like Dani Pedrosa of Spain and Casey Stoner of Australia.
He added the riders will race HRC’s NSF250R Moto3 machines, which are designed to be the first Grand Prix bike for young riders allowing them to learn the secrets of Grand Prix racing on a reliable race bike.
The feeder series is supported and endorsed by the FIM Superbike World Championship (SBK), the CEV Repsol Championship in Spain, as well as co-organiser of the MotoGP Red Bull Rookies Cup, with Sepang International Circuit named as the headquarters.
