A CHANGE to the bike set-up right before the restart of the Moto2 race put paid to Hafizh Syahrin Abdullah’s hopes of finishing inside the points on Sunday.
The Petronas Raceline Malaysia rider, in his third wildcard appearance this year, finished 16th with a time of 26:14.780.
Pole sitter Esteve Rabat of Spain won in 25:45.411. Pol Espargaro of Spain was second in 25:46.974 with Swiss Thomas Luthi third in 25:48.321.
The race was slated for 19 laps but it was red-flagged in the opening lap following crashes by Spaniard Axel Pons and Fadli Immammuddin of Indonesia. The race was restarted and shortened to 12 laps.
”When I went out for the first start, I felt my rear end was not so stable. So I went back into the pits, and they changed the tyre pressure to fix the problem. It turned out worse as the rear tyre started to wear even quicker,” lamented Hafizh.
At the restart, Hafizh, 18th on the grid, moved to 13th. As the race progressed, his rear tyre started sliding off at the corners and he could not fight to finish in the top 10.
“I’m disappointed that I failed to finish inside the points because I knew I had the pace,” said Hafizh, who finished fourth here last year on a wildcard ticket.
Another Malaysian, Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman of Honda Team Asia could only finish 22nd in 26:25.868.
Meanshile, Malaysian-owned Caterham will compete in the Moto2 world championship next year.
Datuk Kamarudin Meranun, the co-chairman of Caterham Group, confirmed Sunday the team’s foray into the championship. He also named American Josh Herrin as one of the two riders for the 2014 season.
Herrin is the reigning AMA Superbike champion. He won the title two weeks ago in the final round of the US series at Laguna Seca.
Caterham have also signed a technical partnership with Suter Racing Technology to jointly develop a Caterham-Suter chassis over the next two years.
