Hafizh Syahrin Abdullah was only the 14th fastest with a time of 2:09.000 in the Moto2 practice on Oct 11, 2013.
SEPANG: Last year, in the second practice session, Moto2 wildcard rider Hafizh Syahrin Abdullah shook the grid when he posted the fastest laptime on the wet Sepang circuit.
This time around, the Petronas Raceline Malaysia rider could only manage 14th fastest with a time of 2:09.000. However, indications are there for Hafizh to put up another stunning performance on Sunday, just like he did last year when he finished fourth.
”I’m happy with how the bike worked today and everything went well for me. We managed to improve our time from the first practice and I think there is a chance that we can dip lower than 2:09 tomorrow,” he said.
Hafizh put up a magnificent performance last year, shocking the motorcycling fraternity – including the MotoGP commentators – when he went on to finish fourth in the Moto2 race as a wildcard rider.
Starting from 27th on the grid, Hafizh shot up to the front group and led the race for a few laps before he started losing traction because of the heavy rain.
“I think I can make it to the top 10 in the qualifying. I believe I can shave off 0.5 seconds in tomorrow’s qualifying because I feel we have the perfect set-up today,” said Hafizh.
Meanwhile, Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman, who is riding for the remaining of the season for Honda Team Asia, posted the 23rd fastest time with 2:10.469.
“It wasn’t a bad start I think ... because the bike worked well today. It was only unfortunate that I crashed at Turn 6 during the second session because we were going for a faster time then,” said Azlan.
“I crashed because I was using medium compound tyres and it needed some time to grip. It just slid under me at that turn and the bike was quite bad. We will just have to wait for tomorrow.”
Meanwhile Zaqhwan Zaidi, who is riding for team Technomag Carxpert as a replacement for the injured Randy Krummenacher, posted 2:10.831 for the 27th fastest time on Friday.
