PETALING JAYA: Touchline SIC Ajo rider Amirul Hafiq Azmi will join a lower-ranked team in next year’s Moto3 world championship as part of his learning process.
Currently competing in the Spanish Championships, Amirul will make his debut in the world championship this weekend as a wildcard in the Malaysian Grand Prix.
“It is our plan to move Amirul from the Spanish Championships to the world championship. But we want him to start with a lower-ranked team as he still has a lot to learn,” said Datuk Razlan Razali, the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) chief executive officer.
“The important thing is to get him to learn the ropes in the world championships, just like Zulfahmi (Khairuddin) when he first started in 2010.
“It is pointless to push him to join Ajo Motorsports (Zulfahmi’s team) despite the strong connection we have with the Finnish team. Ajo are a very established team and results-oriented,” added Razlan.
In his first season as a Moto3 rider, Zulfahmi was attached with the Ongetta team of Spain. A year later, he joined Ajo Motorsports.
Amirul is coping well in the Spanish Championships. He has 11 points from six races to sit in 23rd spot in the standings. There are three more legs in the championships.
“We are talking to two teams right now. They are willing to take in Amirul. Right now, we are finalising the details of the deal.
