Zulfahmi Khairuddin: 'What I need to focus on tomorrow in the race is to push as hard as I can. I think we can finish in the top 10 if we get the settings right and push real hard.'
PETALING JAYA: Despite a strong showing in practice on Friday, Malaysian Moto3 rider Zulfahmi Khairuddin could not improve much on his timing as he qualified in 11th place on the grid in the Aragon Grand Prix in Spain.
The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider clocked 2:00.378 in Saturday’s qualifying session. It was marginally quicker than his practice time of 2:00.924 on Friday, which was fifth fastest of the day.
“To be honest, it’s not the position that we expected ... especially after the performance in practice,” he said.
“But, looking at the pace, it wasn’t so bad as it was easy to clock 2:00 during qualifying.”
Team-mate and championship leader Luis Salom also had a bad day at the office as he qualified in eighth spot.
Sitting in pole position is Alex Rins (Estrella Galicia), who is looking to cut the 21-point deficit on Salom, who leads with 246 points after 13 races.
Zulfahmi’s crash at Turn 11 at the tail-end of the qualifying also did not help him in his bid to improve his lap time but, thankfully, he escaped unhurt.
“It was just a normal crash. There was a small bump on the track and I hit it quite bad. But I managed to continue immediately after that,” he said.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Moto2 rider Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman qualified in 26th spot on the grid.
The Honda Team Asia rider clocked 1:56.221 Saturday – 2.409 off the pace of pole sitter Nicolas Terol (Aspar Team), who clocked 1:53.812.
