Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman: 'My career as a rider has been far from smooth sailing after all. I have had to persevere against many challenges and I’m sure I’ll be able to overcome this one.'
PETALING JAYA: Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman will start living his dream as a grand prix rider when he takes part in the free practice for the San Marino Grand Prix in Italy on Friday.
But the 29-year-old is under no illusion about his maiden run in the Moto2 world championship.
Fresh from strong back-to-back performances in the Petronas Asia Road Racing Championships (ARRC) in Japan recently, where he scored podium finishes, Azlan will don the racing suit of Honda Team Asia in San Marino.
But the current leader in the SuperSports 600cc class of the ARRC is fully aware of the difficult challenges he’ll face in his maiden run in the Moto2 class.
“The Moto2 is a beast of a different character compared to other races. There is a strong mix of world-class riders and competitive young talents racing side-by-side,” he said.
“But I’m determined to overcome the challenges. My career as a rider has been far from smooth sailing after all. I have had to persevere against many challenges and I’m sure I’ll be able to overcome this one.”
With his participation in the Moto2 world championship, Azlan will have to juggle between competing in ARRC and the world championship.
But one thing he is sure to miss is the Petronas AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championships, where he is the defending champion in the CP130 class. He is currently fourth in the championship.
“There’s only one round to go in the ARRC and I’ll certainly be able to finish my season. As for the cub prix, I’ll have to hand over the job to my team-mates in Harian Metro Y-TEQ SCK Honda,” said Azlan.
“Norizman (Ismail), Mohd Affendi (Rosli) and Mohd Fitri (Ashraf Razali) are more than capable to continue the challenge in cub prix in my absence.”
