KUALA LUMPUR: The path to the world motorcycling championship is now clearer for young Asian riders.
The Sepang International Circuit (SIC) has joined forces with Dorna, the commercial rights holder of the MotoGP World Championship, to set up the Shell Advance Asia Talent Cup.
The Asia Talent Cup, which is a feeder series, aims to give the youngsters a competitive circuit to make it as a professional rider.
The registration process, which started on Aug 18, ends on Sept 22.
A total of 22 riders between the ages of 14-20 will be selected to race in a six-race series in Qatar, Indonesia (Sentul), Japan (Motegi), Malaysia (two races in Sepang) and India (Buddh Circuit). All the riders will be astride the Honda HSF250R Moto3 machines.
The project will be led by successful talent scout Alberto Puig, who is responsible for unearthing MotoGP stars like Casey Stoner of Australia and Dani Pedrosa of Spain.
“I cannot overstate the importance of this aspect in motorsports, having personally witnessed the progressive results and achievements of our locally groomed riders through SIC’s talent development programme,” said SIC chief executive officer Datuk Razlan Razali.
“We will select the 22 riders a day after the Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix (Oct 11-13).
“The winner of the Asia Talent Cup will get the chance to compete in the World Championship in Moto2 or Moto3 categories.
“Applications have come not just from Malaysia but from Indonesia, India, Singapore, the Philippines, Nepal, China, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Thailand.
“The concept is similar to the Red Bull Rookies Cup in Europe and we want to tap on the Asian talents.
“This project, will hopefully, give birth to future MotoGP champions from Asia,” said Razlan.
