Mohd Zamri Baba: 'If the engineers did not identify the issues in time, I probably would not be in a good starting position. I just wished we could have found out sooner at Suzuka.'
PETALING JAYA: Mohd Zamri Baba overcame a crash and concussion in the practice session on Thursday to qualify fifth on the grid in the SuperSports 600cc category of the Petronas Asia Road Racing Championships at the Autopolis International Race Course in Japan on Friday.
The Petronas Hong Leong Yamaha rider has struggled to find the perfect set-up for his YZF-R6 machine since the last round in Suzuka last weekend but still managed to clock 1:54.463.
Katusuaki Fujiwara (BEET Kawasaki Racing) will start from front row today after clocking 1:54.413 – a new track record.
RC Koshien’s Shinichi Nakatomi (1:53.711) will start from second while Musashi Boon Siew Honda Racing’s Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman (1:52.880) will be third on the grid.
“To start from fifth is a huge relief to the team. Like Suzuka, we struggled to deliver the power from the engine to the tyres ... and only realised the problem was with the clutch midway through the qualifying,” said Zamri.
“It was a close call. If the engineers did not identify the issues in time, I probably would not be in a good starting position. I just wished we could have found out sooner at Suzuka.”
Meanwhile, Norizman Ismail continued his strong form to secure a front row start in the Underbone 115cc qualifying session.
The Harian Metro Y-TEQ SCK Honda Racing rider clocked his best lap at 1:30.646 to start the race from second on the grid next to Hadi Wijaya (R9 Racing Team), who earned pole position with a new lap record of 1:29.969.
Hadi’s team-mate, Ferlando Herdian, completed the front row in 1:30.671.
