ohd Zamri Baba is looking forward to doing better at Autopolis after a disappointing outing at Suzuka.
PETALING JAYA: After a disappointing outing at the Suzuka-leg last week, Malaysian SuperSports 600cc rider Mohd Zamri Baba is looking to bounce back in style.
And where better to do it than in the penultimate round of the Petronas Asia Road Racing Championship (AARC) at the Autopolis International Race Course in Japan this weekend.
The Petronas Hong Leong Yamaha ace was looking forward to extending his podium streak at the iconic Suzuka circuit in last week’s race with the newly-introduced Dunlop Unbeaten-03 tyres.
However, a poor set-up saw the 30-year-old struggle for pace and he finished 11th in Race 1 and ninth in Race 2.
The Yamaha rider also failed to make the top-five cut in the practice and was also absent from the front row in the qualifying session, marking Zamri’s lowest point in the season.
“Things did not go as expected at Suzuka,” said a disappointed Zamri.
“We hoped that the new Dunlop tyres would help level us against the Suzuka regulars but our plan backfired when we could not find the right balance between engine and suspension set-up to maximise tyre grip. In the end, we did the best we could to just finish within the points.
“We now have to look forward to Autopolis.”
Title contenders Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman (Musashi Boon Siew Honda Racing) and Katsuaki Fujiwara (Beet Kawasaki Racing) all delivered impressive runs at Suzuka to score two podium finishes each and extend their lead in the overall standings.
Azlan leads with 146 points, with Fujiwara (108.5pts) a distant second. Zamri, who picked up just 9.5 points in Suzuka, is third with 94.5 points.
And the 30-year-old is keen to turn things around and regain his form in the early part of the season, which saw him qualify on the front row in every round, claiming five podium finishes out of six races.
