Zulfahmi Khairuddin: 'This weekend we have to continue to work and try to feel comfortable on the track.'
PETALING JAYA: Malaysian Moto3 rider Zulfahmi Khairuddin heads to the Silverstone circuit for the British Grand Prix on Sunday hoping to get the right setting for his bike.
The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider, who endured a difficult time at Brno in the Czech Grand Prix last weekend where he could only collect one point after finishing 15th, is looking to continue working on getting the right feel on the bike – just like when he raced in the Indianapolis Grand Prix on Aug 18, where he finished seventh.
Currently 10th in the standings on 50 points, Zulfahmi trails his ninth-placed team-mate Arthur Sissis by a point.
Prior to Indianapolis, Sissis struggled to get a feel of the bike in the early part of the season and was behind Zulfahmi in the standings.
However, the Australian managed to gain the momentum after tests in Mugello, Italy, during the summer break – just before Indianapolis.
“We arrive at the British GP after a difficult weekend in Brno, where we just about salvaged things by finishing in the points,” said Zulfahmi.
“This weekend we have to continue to work and try to feel comfortable on the track.”
Looking at his past results, Zulfahmi should be able to wear a big smile as he has good memories of the Silverstone circuit, where he finished ninth under the unpredictable British weather last year.
“I like the Silverstone circuit. It’s a great track, one of the longest on the calendar (5.9km) and where we have achieved pretty good results,” he said.
But there’s be plenty of work ahead for Zulfahmi and his team, especially after he posted only the 19th fastest time in practice Friday – clocking 2:17.289 after two sessions.
Maverick Vinales of Team Calvo set the fastest time of 2:14.615.
Top five practice times:
1. Maverick Vinales (Spa) Team Calvo 2:14.615, Miguel Oliveira (Por) Mahindra Racing 2:14.853, 3. Jonas Folger (Ger) Mapfre Aspar 2:14.886, 4. Luis Salom (Spa) Red Bull KTM Ajo 2:15.002, 5. Alex Marquez (Spa) Estrella Galcia 2:15.155.
Selected: 19. Zulfahmi Khairuddin (Mas) Red Bull KTM Ajo 2:17.289.
