KUALA LUMPUR: S. Selvaraju will be featuring in the German Hockey League for a record third time.

The 29-year-old Perak-born forward, who played in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, will turn out for Division Two outfit Wespeen Club.

Selvaraju made his debut in the German League in 2006 for Moenchengladbach, scoring five goals in 12 Division One matches.

In 2008, he played for Berlin in Division One and netted seven goals in 10 matches.

“I’m the only Malaysian player to be playing in the German League for the third time,” said Selvaraju who left for Germany last night.

Selvaraju represented Malaysia 96 times since the 2006 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup.

“I will play about 15 matches and hope to score as many goals as possible to help Wespeen win the Division Two title.

“Malaysian players need to play in European leagues in Germany, Holland and England to further improve their game and performance.

“We cannot improve much if we continue playing in the domestic leagues. The standard here is lower than in Europe,” added Selvaraju, who is the only Malaysian player to have featured in seven different leagues.

He has also played for Midlands in New Zealand, Racing Club de France (France), Armicora (Italy), Khalsa Club (Hong Kong), Air Force (Thailand) and Universiti Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).

Selvaraju will be back at the end of October to represent UniKL in the Malaysia Hockey League (MHL).
