Shazrul Imran Nazli (right) has been included in the national juniors squad on a playing tour to India. He and Joel Samuel van Huizen will get a chance to prove their worth and book their place in the Junior World Cup team.
KUALA LUMPUR: Midfielders Joel Samuel van Huizen and Shazrul Imran Nazli will get the chance to prove their worth in the playing tour to India next week.
The national juniors will leave for New Delhi on Oct 16 to play three friendly matches against the Indian Juniors on Oct 17, 19 and 20 at the Dhyan Chand Hockey Stadium, which is the venue of the Junior World Cup from Dec 6-15.
Joel and Shazrul did not feature in the six-nation Sultan of Johor Cup in Johor Baru last month, where Malaysia finished runners-up to champions India.
National junior coach K. Dharmaraj said that there are 25 players in the training squad and Joel and Shazrul are the 19th and 20th choice players.
“I believe these two players need to be given a chance to prove their worth in the Junior World Cup team.
“The three friendly matches with India will give me a chance to see how well Joel and Shazrul can combine with the other players in the team,” said Dharmaraj.
According to him, the core of the Junior World Cup squad would consist of players who featured in the Sultan of Johor Cup.
“The tour to New Delhi will also give us the chance to get used to the venue, logistics and also the official hotel for the Junior World Cup,” said Dharmaraj.
He said he would name his final squad of 18 players for the Junior World Cup by Nov 18 and they would depart for New Delhi on Dec 1.
“We will play a friendly match against Belgium on Dec 3 before the Junior World Cup begins on Dec 6,” said Dharmaraj.
