Mohd Syamim Yusof is no chicken on the field. He has already scored two goals in five matches at the Sultan of Johor Cup and intends to score more in the final on Sunday.
JOHOR BARU: National junior hockey forward Mohd Syamim Yusof’s nickname is “ayam” (chicken).
This is because he used to help out in his family business selling chicken at the Taiping market a few years ago.
Do not be fooled though. Syamim is far from a chicken when he’s on the hockey pitch.
The 20-year-old lanky Syamim is a skilful player who has his own style when it comes to scoring goals.
He does not jump for joy but stays calm and cool, despite having scored two goals in five matches in the Sultan of Johor Cup.
His main challenge now is to score against India in the final on Sunday.
Syamim said he does not mind his team-mates calling him “ayam”.
“I liked helping my parents in the market as it taught me the hardships of life. It also helped me become a better person and a good hockey player,” said Syamim.
“Although I have scored two goals in the tournament, I am still not pleased.
“I want to help Malaysia win the Sultan of Johor Cup and hope to put my name on the score sheet in the final,” added Syamim, who is playing for the third consecutive time in the tournament.
