Skipper Azlan ready to end Perak’s 21-year title drought

KUALA LUMPUR: Perak will be out to end their 21-year title drought when they take on Kuala Lumpur in the Razak Cup Division One final at the Wisma Belia Stadium in Kuantan on Sunday.

The odds, however, are stacked against five-time winners Perak, who last won the tournament in 1992. In their group match on Tuesday, the silver state went down 4-3 to 19-time champions KL. Perak also reached the 2010 final, only to lose by a last-minute goal by Harvinder Singh at the same venue.

National defender Azlan Misron (pic), who has been featuring for Perak since 2001, believes that they have a good chance to topple KL.

“We gave our best against KL in the final three years ago but we were just unlucky to lose out on a last-minute goal,” said Azlan.

“Our mission in the final is to avenge that defeat and end our 21-year title drought.

“We will play an all-out attacking game and score early to put pressure on them,” said Azlan, who is the most experienced player in the national team with 317 international caps to his credit.

The 30-year-old Azlan will not only marshall the defence but we will also have to deliver the goals from the penalty corners.

He has scored three goals from penalty corners in four matches.

“My goal in the tournament is to score in the final and help Perak lift the title,” said Azlan.
