KUALA LUMPUR: Nineteen times champion Kuala Lumpur and Perak will contest the Division One final of the Razak Cup at the Kuantan Hockey Stadium on Sunday.
KL defeated Negri Sembilan 4-2 after trailing by one goal in the early stages of the match on Friday. Perak beat Malacca 3-2 in a closely contested match on the adjacent pitch.
Negri took the lead in the 17th minute when R. Kanaga Sundram scored a field goal.
KL stormed back to equalise when Nor Syafiq Sumantri scored from a penalty corner rebound in the 21st minute.
From then on KL dominated the play and in the space of two minutes had the match in their hands to go off at half-time with a 3-1 lead.
S. Selvaraju was the scorer in the 30th minute and Nabil Fiqri Mohamed Nor followed up with another goal a minute later.
Negri managed to reduce the deficit in the 41st minute with M. Kalisweran scoring a field goal.
But Harvinder Singh put KL back in command with a field goal in the 42nd minute to seal the victory.
KL team manager S. Samson said the team performed consistently and were able to keep their structure throughout the match.
“We are happy to be back in the final and hope that we can go all the way this time and clinch our 20th title. There is a consistency about this team and that makes them strong. The final is a different ball game but we will be ready for Perak. We have played them in the group phase and won 2-1. They have some very good players,” he said.
KL and Perak contested the 2011 final in Kuantan and the city team won 2-1. Perak, who have won the title six times, were made to work hard for the win over Malacca.
Azril Misron gave Perak the lead in the 14th minute off a penalty corner and Mohamed Razali Zulkifli added a field goal in the 21st minute to put them in a comfortable position.
Mohamed Aminuddin Zin reduced the deficit for Malacca in the 34th minute.
Former national junior Amir Farid killed any hopes of a fightback by Malacca with a goal in the 50th minute to make it 3-1 for Perak.
B. Namasivayam added a goal for Malacca in the 70th minute but it was too late to help his team.
Perak assistant team manager Azraai Zain said that there was vast improvement in the team and the players were able to play to instructions.
“It was crucial that we kept to our strategy and the players did well to carry it out. Malacca were good but what gave us the edge was the players’ ability to finish off their moves.
“The senior players like Mohamed Shukri, Azlan Misron and Hafifihafiz Hanafi raised their game and this helped the younger players to settle down quickly.
“We are looking forward to the final against KL. We hope to be on the winning side this time,” he said.
