KUALA LUMPUR: For the first time Kuala Lumpur will not have the services of their top two penalty corner specialists in the 51st edition of the Razak Cup in Kuantan.
Defender Mohd Razie Abdul Rahim is getting some much-needed rest after featuring in the Asia Cup, which ended in Ipoh last Sunday.
The 25-year-old Razie scored four penalty corner goals in the Asia Cup.
The other penalty corner specialist, Mohd Amin Rahim, is skipping the Razak Cup as he is still recuperating from a torn ligament in his knee, which he sustained during training with the national team in June.
KL, the 19-time champions, have the services of three national players. The trio are defender and captain Baljit Singh Charun, midfielder Nabil Fiqri Mohd Noor and forward Mohd Ramadan Rosli.
Another top penalty corner flicker, Faizal Saari from Terengganu, will also skip the Razak Cup as he will feature for Berlin HC in the German Hockey League.
Coach K. Rajan said that in the absence of Razie and Amin KL won’t have any penalty corner specialist on their team for the first time in the tournament.
“It will affect our chances of scoring goals from penalty corners. We will have to score from field attempts,” said Rajan.
“Without a few national players, we have named a number of juniors for the team.
“Most of the national players are taking a break from playing ... so the Division One title will be an open affair,” added Rajan.
KL have included Norhizzat Sumantri, who played for Malaysia in the World League semi-finals in Johor Baru in July.
They also have the services of two former internationals - S. Selvaraju and S. Shankar.
Eight teams will feature in Division One, which begins Sunday.
KL, who finished third in Kuantan last year, will open their Group B campaign against Penang on Sunday.
The other teams in Group B are Perak and last year’s finalist Pahang.
Defending champions Terengganu are drawn in Group A with Negri Sembilan, Johor and Malacca.
