MALACCA: Last year’s Razak Cup Division Two champions Malacca are banking on the coach-captain combination of S. Velappan and Azrul Effendy Bistamam to work their magic again when the state compete in Division One this year.
The Razak Cup hockey tournament will be held in Kuantan beginning Saturday and Malacca have been drawn in Group A with defending champions Terengganu, Negri Sembilan and Johor.
Group B comprises 19-time champions Kuala Lumpur, hosts Pahang, Perak and Penang.
But Velappan, who also coached Johor to Razak Cup triumph in 2008, prefers to play down expectations, although he is confident that Malacca are capable of making the semi-finals, at least.
He based this on the presence of several regulars from last year’s squad as well as the addition of two debutants – Aminuddin Md Zain and Mohd Fadzli Anuar.
“We have prepared and trained diligently in centralised training, which was held over a longer period compared to previous years,” Velappan said before the team left for Kuantan Wednesday.
“Over the Merdeka weekend, we beat Armed Forces 4-1 and Selangor 5-2 in friendlies and the team showed much depth in all departments.
“But we will take it one match at a time and, with luck, we may even make the final.”
The Malacca squad:
Mohd Hanafi Hassan, Mohd Harfizi Baharom, Azrul Effendy Bistaman, Mohd Hafizuddin Mat Desa, Muhammad Alif Ahmad Salim, B. Namasivayam, Nor Ikhram Sulaiman, Mohd Faid Farhadh Mohd Shah, Ahmad Anuar Shem Kamar, Hazlan Hamzah, Muhammad Iderus Ali, Amirrullah Zainol, Dedy Ariyadi Jumaidi, Mohd Huzairy Mohd Zin, Aminuddin Md Zain and Mohd Fadzli Anuar.
