IPOH: Midfielder Mohd Fitri Saari has been named skipper of the National Juniors for the six-nation Sultan of Johor Cup at the Taman Daya Stadium from Sept 22-29.
National Juniors coach K. Dharmaraj, who led the hockey team to the Junior Asia Cup title in Malacca last year, named the hardworking Fitri as the captain because he is the most experienced player among the juniors.
The 20-year-old Fitri, who has represented Malaysia 58 times at senior level, also played well in the just-concluded Asia Cup in Ipoh.
Four other senior national team players are also in the 18-member team. They are defenders Faiz Jali Helmi and Mohd Izad Hakimi Jamaluddin, midfielder Meor Mohd Azuan Hassan and forward Mohd Firhan Ashaari.
Except for Meor, the others featured in the Asia Cup.
Besides Malaysia, the other teams competing in the Sultan of Johor Cup are Argentina, England, Pakistan, India and South Korea.
The Malaysians will resume training Tuesday. They will leave for Johor Baru next week to continue their training.
Goalkeepers: Mohd Hazrul Faiz Ahmad Sobri, Mohd Hafizuddin Othman.
Defenders: Faiz Helmi Jali, Mohd Izad Hakimi Jamaluddin, G. Kavin Kartik, Mohd Zulhairi Hashim, Mohd Nor Aqmal Abdul Ghaffar.
Midfielders: Mohd Fitri Saari (captain), Mohd Azri Hassan, Meor Mohd Azuan Hassan, Shazril Irwan Nazli, Mohd Haziq Samsul.
Forwards: Mohd Firhan Ashaari, Mohd Syamim Yusof, Mohd Rashid Baharom, Mohd Shahril Saabah, Mohd Azwar Abdul Rahman, Mohd Hafiz Zainol.
Reserves: Joel Samuel van Huizen, Shazrul Imran Nazli.
