KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur will not have the services of penalty corner specialist Mohd Amin Rahim for the 51st edition of the Razak Cup hockey tournament, which begins in Kuantan on Sept 5.
The 33-year-old defender was dropped from the Asia Cup team after tearing his knee ligament during training last month.
He has been undergoing rehabilitation at the National Sports Institute (ISN) in Bukit Jalil since last month.
“The doctor has advised me not to play in any tournament as it will only aggravate the injury. I won’t play in the Razak Cup as I want to be fully recovered and feature in next year’s World Cup in Holland,” said Amin, who has 247 international caps to his credit.
“I’ve been playing for Malaysia since the 1999 Brunei SEA Games but never featured in the World Cup or the Olympics.
“I’m not sure how long it will take for me to recover from the injury.”
Malaysia have virtually qualified for next year’s World Cup in The Hague, Holland. It will be held from May 31-June 14.
Amin, a Tenaga Nasional player, last featured for Malaysia in the Champions Challenge I in Argentina last November.
A total of 15 teams will feature in the two division Razak Cup this year – eight in Division One and seven in Division Two.
In Division One, 19-time champions Kuala Lumpur, who finished third in Kuantan last year, are in Group B with runners-up Pahang, Perak and Penang.
Defending champions Terengganu, Negri Sembilan, Johor and last year’s Division Two champions Malacca are in Group A.
The Division Two teams – Selangor, Armed Forces, Police, Kedah, Perlis, Kelantan and Sabah – will play in a round robin format.
The finals for Divisions One and Two are slated for Sept 15.
