KUALA LUMPUR: The national team were supposed to name their final two players for the Asia Cup Friday but have instead delayed it until after the friendly against India on Tuesday.
But, at least, the team management have trimmed the number of choices from nine to three.
So, it will be left to Azreen Rizal, Jivan Mohan and Mohd Ramadhan Rosli to fight for the last two spots.
Initially, nine players were in contention for the two slots when the 16 players were named on Aug 6.
But Mohd Amin Rahim and Meor Mohd Azuan were ruled out with injuries.
That left Azreen, Jivan, Mohd Ramadhan, Ahmad Kazamirul Nasruddin, Khairulnizam Ibrahin, Mohd Azammi Adabi and Norhizzat Sumantri fighting for the two slots.
But now that Azreen, Jivan and Mohd Ramadhan are in the running, the other four have been named as non-travelling players in the team.
Malaysia have lined up two matches prior to the Asia Cup, where they are in Group A with Pakistan, Japan and Taiwan.
The tournament will be held in Ipoh from Aug 24-Sept 1.
Apart from the match against India, Malaysia will play against Oman on Thursday as their final practice game.
Malaysia will open their campaign against Taiwan on Aug 24.
Group B comprises India, South Korea, Bangladesh and Oman.
National coach Paul Revington said Friday that they could delay naming the squad as Malaysia had homeground advantage.
“All our players attended the training session in Ipoh, which ended on Thursday, and we’re happy with the commitment shown by them,” he said.
“As we hold a slight advantage by playing at home, we felt that the selection can be held over to the final week of preparations.
“We have shortlisted three players and two will be selected after the friendly against India.”
The players are now back in KL and will return to Ipoh on Tuesday.
