GLASGOW: MALAYSIAN rhythmic gymnasts finished without a golden glitter but at least Wong Poh San provided some silver lining at the SEE Hydro in Glasgow.
The 18-year-old Poh San managed to grab a silver and a bronze in the individual ribbon and hoop finals respectively on Saturday.
The teenager was almost in tears after picking up the silver (14.250) to finish behind Francesca Jones of Wales (14.500) on the final day of the competition.
Canadian favourite Patricia Bezzoubenko, who won a total of five gold medals in the competition, took the bronze (13.800).
Poh San said that although she was satisfied with her overall performance, she was sad that “I did not meet my personal goal of winning a gold in Glasgow”.
“I tried my best but it just wasn’t good enough,” said Poh San, who will now hope to make amends at the Incheon Asian Games in September.
Poh San was the favourite in the ribbons event after being ranked top in the individual all-around finals on Friday.
The only consolation for Poh San is that she beat star performer Bezzoubenko for the silver in the ribbons.
“Beezoubenko is a world-class gymnast … I know I can beat her one day if I continue to work harder,” said Poh San, who earlier took the bronze in the hoop finals with a score of 14.650.
Bezzoubendko took the hoop gold (14.800) while Laura Halford of Wales settled for the silver (14.7550).
On the opening day, Poh San won a bronze in the team event with Amy Kwan Dict Weng and Fatin Zakirah. In the individual all-around finals, Poh San finished fourth.
In the New Delhi Games in 2010, rhythmic gymnast Elaine Koon contributed five medals – one gold, one silver and three bronzes – in the individual competition.
At the 2006 edition in Melbourne, Malaysia bagged a silver in the team event. Durratun Nashihin Rosli was the star performer then, with three individual silvers while Lim Wen Chean got two individual bronzes.
