PETALING JAYA: A lengthy layoff is never good.
But Farah Ann Abdul Hadi proved 10 months away from competition has only served to stoke the fire deep within her to come back stronger.
And the 20-year-old did just that en route to winning the bronze in her pet event, the floor exercise, at the Artistic Celtic Cup-Commonwealth Invitational in Perth, Scotland, on Sunday.
Farah scored 13.150 points to finish behind Scottish duo Emma White (13.650) and Erin McLachlan (13.450). Tan Ing Yueh, the other Malaysian representative, finished sixth with 12.400 points.
The win also gave Farah her second medal of the championships, having won the team bronze with Ing Yueh, Nur Eli Ellina Azmi and Rachel Yeoh on Saturday.
“It was very important for me to produce a good result here as I’ve been away from competition for so long due to my injury and recovery period,” said Farah, who took time off to recover from a shoulder and ankle injury since the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Kuala Lumpur last July.
“I was hoping to get a good result, but being out for 10 months I was also quite nervous. I just wanted to get back that feeling of competing again. I still feel I can improve a lot. I need to train harder to improve my form and sharpen my skills.
“It was also good to show that we’re capable of doing well and to build up that momentum heading towards the Commonwealth and Asian Games,”she added.
Ing Yueh also came close to winning a bronze for Malaysia. She accumulated 12.250 points in the uneven bars, losing third place to Scotland’s Erin McLachlan (12.600). Farah was placed joint fifth with Northern Ireland’s Sarah Beck on 11.750.
The gold was shared by Trinidad and Tobago’s Marisa Dick and Scotland’s Emma White after the duo garnered identical 13.200 points.
In the vault, Ing Yueh finished fifth on 13.350 while Eli Ellina ended up eighth with 11.875.
Farah (11.850) and Eli Ellina (11.250) could only manage seventh and eighth respectively in the balance beam.
