PETALING JAYA: Federal Territory’s Asian junior champion Olivia Tai Qing Tong was in top form after she swept up all four individual gold medals on offer in the junior category of the MSSM (national schools) rhythmic gymnastics championships.
There was simply no denying the national back-up gymnast who clinched the gold in the ball (14.550), clubs (14.600), hoop (15.050) and ribbon (14.350) events at the Dewan Wawasan at the Port Dickson Polytechnic on Thursday.
Her team-mate Shasangari Sivaneswary Nagarajan came close to causing an upset in the clubs event, however her score of 14.550 was not enough to top Olivia’s score of 14.600. Selangor’s Chong Lok Yi took home the bronze with 12.950.
The 15-year-old Olivia from Convent Bukit Nanas, who is due to compete at the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games in August, also won the all-around individual title on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, in the pre-junior category, FT again dominated as Nur Naieme Zainul Ariffin clinched four medals – two golds (clubs and free hand) and two silvers (hoop and rope).
Naieme took gold in both the clubs (11.850) and free hand (11.950), but she missed out on a perfect flourish, after finishing second behind Selangor’s Tai Ushyan in both the hoop and rope events.
Ushyan finished top in the hoop and rope event after scoring 11.850 and 11.550 respectively, ahead of Naiemi who managed 11.300 (hoop) and 11.200 (rope).
However, Naieme still ended the competition with the lion’s share of the medals with five in total – three gold, two silvers. She also won gold in the individual all-around on Wednesday.
