KUALA LUMPUR: Thailand’s Pimnipa Panthong staved off a fierce challenge from compatriot and best pal Chayanit Wangahaporn to claim a one-stroke triumph at the 31st Malaysian Ladies Amateur Open.
The 16-year-old Pimnipa posted her second straight even-par 72 for a three-day total of six-under 210 to beat Chayanit, who signed off with a 70 for a 211 total.
“I have won several regional championships back home, but this is my first title outside Thailand,” said Pimnipa, who was introduced to golf by her grandfather at the age of 10.
“I’m really delighted, never felt better. It was a hard-fought victory right until the very last hole against my best friend.
“I was so comfortable after the first four holes as I went six shots up with another two birdies as Chayanit made a bogey.
“I then slipped up miserably, bogeying the next two holes. Chayanit really capitalised on that, first by striking an eagle on the seventh and consecutive birdies on eighth and ninth holes.
“The battle then went on until I made my last putt to seal the one-stroke victory. It was really a relief,” added Pimnipa.
The Thai pair and Ornnicha Konsuthea also claimed the team event for Thailand with a combined total of 687.
Malaysian No. 1 Nur Durriyah Damian, who struggled to impress in the first two round, finally came alive with a 68, the lowest score of the day, to finish joint third with three others on 216.
