KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will be counting on golfers Nur Durriyah Damian and Co to keep hold of the Malaysian Ladies Amateur Open (MLAO) title at the Sungai Long Golf and Country Club (SLGCC).
Defending champion Kelly Tan, who bagged her second crown last year and 2009 winner Michelle Koh, have taken their career to the next level by turning pro this year.
The 19-year-old Durriyah is now the most senior member of the national team and hopes are high on her to retain the title home.
“With Kelly and Michelle are no longer here to lead us this time around, we are hoping to see the likes of Durriyah, the US-based Asha (Lakshme Bala Krishnan) and Dianne (Luke Jia Zhen) rise to the occasion,” said Malaysian Ladies Golf Association (Malga) executive director Datuk Rabeahtul A. Abbas, who is also acting as tournament coordinator.
“There are also several up and coming juniors such as Winnie Ng, Qistina Balkis and Natasha Andre Oon, who have been winning a lot of junior competitions. The championship will be good testing ground for girls to see where they stand against the ladies.”
The three-day competition has attracted a total of 76 competitors from 13 countries.
Apart from Malaysia as the host, also in the fray are Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Taiwan, United States, France, South Korea, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia and India.
