Gavin grabs a silver at world varsity meet

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian amateur Gavin Kyle Green added another feather to his cap with a silver medal finish in the just-concluded World University Golf Championship in Crans-Montana, Switzerland.

A final round three-under 69 saw Gavin wresting second spot with an eight-under 280, a stroke ahead of Spaniard Daniel Berna in the men’s individual competition. Gerardo Ruiz of Mexico emerged champion after shooting a 71 for a 10-under 278.

Gavin was one of only two in the field of 71 golfers to play under par throughout all four rounds.

He was the first-round leader with a four-under 68 and kept up his consistent display with rounds of 72 and 71 at the par-72 Severiano Ballesteros course, which is also home to the European Masters.

Gavin’s efforts helped Malaysia to finish fourth out of 17 countries in the team competition with a five-over 869.

June turned out to be a splendid month for Gavin, who is now in his final year of business studies at the University of New Mexico in the United States.

The 20-year-old created history when he became the first amateur to win on the Asian Development Tour (ADT) with a sensational 11-stroke triumph at the PGM Vascory Templer Park Championship in Malaysia two weeks ago.

Gavin subsequently shot to No. 5 in the world amateur rankings, having also won four competitions on the US college scene for the 2013-2014 season.
