Hotshot golfer Gavin on the brink to be first amateur ADT winner

PETALING JAYA: The stage is all set for Malaysia’s Gavin Kyle Green to be crowned as the first amateur golfer to win on the Asian Development Tour (ADT) since its inception in 2010.

The 20-year-old, who held a two-shot halfway lead, extended his advantage on top of the leaderboard by a massive nine strokes yesterday and is in prime position to win the RM250,000 PGM Vascory Templer Park Championship.

A five-under 67 in the third round put him on a commanding three-day total of 18-under 198 ahead of second placed Kwanchai Tannin of Thailand, who carded the day’s lowest round of 66 for a 207 total.

The local trio of Airil Rizman Zahari (69), Khor Kheng Hwai (73) and Shaaban Hussin (75) were tied for third on 208, while Abel Tam (67) and defending champion Nicholas Fung (71) were joint sixth on seven-under 209.

Barring a meltdown in today’s final round. Gavin is also all set to clinch his first title on the PGM Tour.

“I hit it solid again. I didn’t hole as many putts as I could on my front nine. But it got better on the back nine, especially towards the last few holes which were very important,” said Gavin, who fired six birdies against one bogey.

“That gave me a lot of confidence. I am very happy with my current standing now.

“My game is really solid right now. I just have to continue doing what I have been doing. The weather is really hot out there.

“It is very important to concentrate on my game. I have been telling myself to stay patient. I will play my best tomorrow,” added the United States-based Gavin.
