Gavin Kyle Green fired two eagles and six birdies against one double-bogey for a two-day total of 13-under 131 at PGM Vascory Templer Park.
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s top amateur Gavin Kyle Green has taken a giant leap towards his first-ever Asian Development Tour (ADT) title after carding an impressive eight-under 64 to take the halfway lead at the RM250,000 PGM Vascory Templer Park Championship.
The 20-year-old Gavin, who fired two eagles and six birdies against one double-bogey for a two-day total of 13-under 131 on Thursday, will head into third round with two-stroke cushion over compatriot Shaaban Hussin, who was also on fiery form after returning with the day’s lowest score of 63.
Another local pro Khor Kheng Hwai sits in third on 135 total to remain in contention at the Templer Park Country Club.
Gavin is in a buoyant mood after conquering the leaderboard in his first attempt on the ADT.
“My game was more solid today (yesterday). I hit many more good shots and I kept the ball in place,” said the United States-based golfer.
“I made a double on the fifth but was able to recover swiftly with a birdie and an eagle on the next two holes. I am more confident to play well in the last two rounds now.”
The world No. 23 amateur reiterated that he has no intention to turn professional any time soon.
“I’m into my last year of college now. I will only consider turning professional after I complete my studies (at the University of New Mexico),” he explained.
“Meanwhile, I will just try and gain as much experience as I can. Hopefully I can continue to play solid and finish off well on Saturday.”
China’s Ye Jian-feng stayed a further two shots back in fourth place after carding a 69. Overnight leader Mathiam Keyser of South Africa, defending champion Nicholas Fung of Malaysia and England’s Jake Shepherd shared fifth after signing for rounds of 72, 70 and 70 respectively.
The halfway stage was set at one-over 145 with a total of 57 players, including two amateurs, qualifying for the last two rounds.
