Bayron bags maiden win in Manila

PETALING JAYA: Filipino Rufino Bayron bagged his first career win in style after posting a two-under 70 in the final round to capture the ICTSI Orchard Golf Championship in Manila by four shots.

The 32-year-old, who headed into the final day with a three-shot advantage, never looked like losing it as he went on to card a four-day total of 16-under 272.

Japan’s Tomokazu Yoshinaga carded a final round 71 to end up second at the Orchard Golf and Country Club yesterday.

Japan’s Masaru Takahashi and Australia’s R.J. Caracella were a further two shots back in joint third.

Although Bayron suffered a bogey on the ninth hole, he more than made up for it with a 15-footer eagle on the 14th before confirming his victory in style with a tap-in birdie on the last.

“I’m so happy. This is the first time I’ve ever won after coming close on the local circuit before,” said Bayron.

“I played it safe today and it worked out. I didn’t really have to attack but, after 13 holes, I said ‘let’s go for it’ and the eagle and birdie came.”

Bayron’s breakthrough means he now joins older brother Jay, a three-time ADT champion and the 2012 ADT number one, in the winner’s circle.

“This victory means a lot to me. I’ve played against many good players and I’m happy that I can finally lift this title,” said Bayron, who took home US$10,500 (RM33,700) and a precious six Official World Golf Ranking points.
