KUALA LUMPUR: Budding junior golfers received a boost as Ambank Group will renew their RSGC Ambank Junior Amateur Open sponsorship for a third straight year.
This year’s event will be held from April 22-24 at the Royal Selangor Golf Club.
So far 85 golfers have signed up to compete in the four categories – Boys’ Under-18 and Under-15 as well as the Girls’ Under-18 and Under-15.
Tournament deputy chairman Shahrir Roose is expecting at least 100 entries – exceeding the previous high of 90 in 2012.
“The registration is still open until April 11 so there is still time,” said Shahrir.
“When this tournament started two years ago, we had 90 golfers taking part. Last year we only had a turnout of 60 because it was held in July, which clashed with several other championships.
“That’s why we brought it back to April and we’re expecting more.
“To date, we have entries from Australia, the Philippines, Singapore and the UAE. We’re still hoping for the Thai golfers to sign up.
“And I believe we are capable of achieving a playing field of at least 100. The Royal Selangor Golf Club has good prestige and excellent greens and it offers an excellent challenge as well as amateur ranking points,” added Shahrir.
