Malaysian Open: Nachimuthu, Nicholas among 22 locals competing

PETALING JAYA: Twenty-two national golfers will be pitting their skills against the world’s best, including top draw Lee Westwood, in the Maybank Malaysian Open at the Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club (KLGCC) on April 17-20.

Eighteen Malaysians have qualified thus far. The remaining four will be chosen via a two-day national qualifier at the same venue from Feb 18.

A total of 156 golfers will compete in the US$2.75mil (RM9.14mil) Malaysian Open.

Among the Malaysians who have already qualified are R. Nachimuthu and Arie Fauzi (sponsors’ invite) and Nicholas Fung (by virtue of being in the top 60 on the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit).

The others are Danny Chia, Shaaban Hussin, Iain Steel, S. Murthy, S. Siva Chandran, Airil Rizman, Sukree Othman, Iylia Jamil, Khor Kheng Hwai, Shaifubari Muda and Rizal Amin as well as four amateur golfers.

The three amateurs named are Gavin Kyle Green, Ervin Chang and Solomon Emilio Rosidin. A fourth amateur will be named later.

Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) president Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor said that the national qualifiers “is the fairest way to choose the remaining four representatives”.
