(Reuters) - Paul McGinley marked the anniversary of his appointment as Europe's Ryder Cup captain by surging to within one stroke of the lead in the first round of the $2.7 million (1.65 million pounds) Abu Dhabi Championship on Thursday.
The 47-year-old Irishman, without a tournament victory since the 2005 Volvo Masters in Spain, rolled back the years in the Middle East with a five-birdie 68.
