KUALA LUMPUR: The future certainly looks bright for junior golfer Winnie Ng Yu Xuan.
Having won the Under-12 category in the recently-concluded AmBank SportExcel Junior Golf Grand Finals at the Kota Permai Golf and Country Club in Shah Alam, Winnie has set her sights on playing against the best in the future.
In the Grand Finals, she carded a two-day total of 156 to pip Natasha Andrea Oon (157).
The 12-year-old Winnie has, in fact, been impressive in the past few months.
Apart from the Shah Alam win, she also triumphed in the third leg of the Malaysia Premier Elite Junior Golf Circuit in October as well as three other SportExcel National Junior Golf Circuit events.
Winnie, who is coached by former national golfer Koe Lai Yin, also picked up the overall and grand champion titles in the SportExcel national junior golf circuit.
Winnie, who is one of the golfers to be presented with a scholarship at the Cempaka International Ladies College in Sepang, seems to have a lot on her plate at the moment.
But the gutsy teenager is not fazed as she dreams of turning professional one day, just like her idol – national golfer Kelly Tan.
“I still have a long way to go but my main target is to represent Malaysia in the 2020 Olympics in Japan. However, my priority is my studies ... I plan to graduate with a degree before turning pro and playing in the LPGA, just like Kelly,” said Winnie, whose twin brother Victor has also been enjoying the same success in the Under-12 category.
The siblings’ progress is carefully monitored by their father Kenny Ng.
“In the last few years, Winnie, Victor and I sat down and planned what scores to achieve for every competition that they took part in,” said Kenny.
“As the year progressed, they surpassed all of our targets.
“As a father, I am proud of their achievements and I also know that they can achieve much more in the future.”
