SUBANG: It was a crowded leaderboard after the opening round of the Maybank Tour Players’ Championship, with R. Nachimuthu, Hans Jamil and Muhammad Rusli Johari sharing the lead at the Saujana Golf and Country Club in Subang.

Nachimuthu, Hans and Rusli had identical score cards – six birdies and two bogeys – en route to carding a four-under 68 on Wednesday as they fight on two fronts – grab crucial Order of Merit points in PGM’s season-ending RM350,000 tournament and the all-important wildcard entry into next year’s Maybank Malaysia Open.

Order of Merit leader Nicholas Fung has opted to skip this tournament.

However, Nachimuthu, who is second in the Order of Merit, faces a triple threat as Shaaban Hussin, Airil Rizman and Sukree Othman are hot on his heels.

Perlis Classic champion Sukree, who carded a three-under 69, was happy with his round, saying that his strong iron-play made the difference.

But the 37-year-old knows he will have to find his A-game if he wants to win.

“I hit 17 greens today, missing just one on the 18th. I had good rhythm and I did not feel any pressure as I kept giving myself birdie chances,” said Sukree.

“All in all, I had four birdies and a bogey ... and to start this event like that was good, I thought. Also, my driver was good off the tee. But I know there is still a long way to way – three rounds – and there are good players in the field, so I will have to keep it up if I hope to win on Saturday.”

Completing the top 10 were Rashid Ismail in fifth on two-under 70, followed by Faridil Atras in sixth on 71 and Dino Abdillah, Ben Leong, Anis Helmi Hassan, Akhmal Tarmizee, Kenneth De Silva and Wilson Choo all tied for seventh – one stroke behind on even-par.
