PETALING JAYA: The Sabah Masters from Jan 8-11 will once again take centrestage on the Asean PGA Tour as the grand finale to the 2012-2013 season.
Boasting prize money of US$75,000 (RM238,000), the event to be played at Sutera Harbour Golf and Country Club, will play a decisive role in determining who wins the Order of Merit title.
This year, Filipino Antonio Lascuna lifted the Sabah Masters trophy and ended a long frustrating wait for his first win on the Asean PGA Tour.
He beat pre-tournament favourite Mardan Mamat from Singapore on the third hole of a sudden-death play-off.
The two players are expected to return along with a wealth of leading players from the region including Sabah’s very own Nicholas Fung, the reigning Asean PGA Order of Merit champion. Nicholas finished eighth this year and joint second the previous season.
The Sabah Masters was revived in 2011 after a gap of 10 years and saw Thailand’s Wisut Artjanawat triumph.
The tournament has a storied history with some great names having won the title including Thailand’s Thaworn Wiratchant in 1996.
This will mark the third successive season Sutera Harbour has hosted the tournament.
The Asean PGA Tour will resume with the Ngeri Sembilan Masters at the Seremban International Golf Club starting tomorrow.
