Kiradech Aphibarnrat: 'I’m happy with the three-under for today and there’s a good chance I’ll catch up on the final round tomorrow.'
KUALA LUMPUR: Kiradech Aphibarnrat is in a great position to challenge for the CIMB Classic title after completing the third round tied for third with American Gary Woodland.
Kiradech shot a three-under 69 for a three-day total of 11-under 205 to tie with Woodland, who carded a five-under 67.
They are just one shot behind joint leaders Ryan Moore and Chris Stroud of the United States.
“I’m pleased with the way I’m playing right now. It was a good start again for me today. Three days in a row, it’s been great front nine, but today, I struggled a bit on the back nine,” said Kiradech, who shot an eagle on the third as well as birdies on the third, fourth, fifth and 10th.
“With three rounds of golf, it’s been mixed fortunes on the back nine, but I was working on my putting a lot yesterday and I think that helped.
“I’m happy with the three-under for today and there’s a good chance I’ll catch up on the final round tomorrow.”
There’s also been a lot of talk about his chances of a back-to-back victory at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC). The Thai won the Maybank Malaysian Open here in March when he beat Italian Eduardo Molinari to the title by one stroke.
The 24-year-old has also been consistent in the last three days – scoring 67-69-69 to be the best performing Asian in the tournament.
So, can he repeat the feat and pull off another win this time around?
“Well, I don’t want to talk myself up ... as always, I’ll just try to play my game. I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself. I just want to have a good day of golf, try to make every shot the best that I can and enjoy the final round,” said Kiradech.
“All I can say is that I’ve got loads of experience playing on this course last time, especially when I hit the shot from the bunkers. I think that I learned a lot from that experience and I’ll try to bring that same attitude tomorrow.
“I’ll try to be more focused on my game, walk the plays in my head and that’s it.
“Whatever the outcome, win or lose, if I shoot 10-under or 10-over tomorrow, if I do my best, I will just accept it.”
