OVERNIGHT leader Ryan Moore went to bed very early on Thursday and got up well before sunrise on Friday.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t such a rewarding day as he failed to reproduce the magic of the previous round in the CIMB Classic at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club.
The American, who had fired a sparkling nine-under 63 on Thursday despite making the gruelling trip to Kuala Lumpur after playing in Las Vegas over the weekend, only managed a regulation 72 to drop to second spot on the leaderboard.
Moore had three birdies – ninth, 11th and 12th – and three bogeys – fifth, 13th and 16th – to be four strokes behind fellow American and half-way leader Keegan Bradley going into the weekend on nine-under 135.
“For some reason, I woke up pretty early and I felt good in the morning,” he said.
“I think I fell asleep at 6.45 last night and woke up at like 4am.
“It’s nice that we are going to continue with the morning tee times but well, obviously, it wasn’t the round I had yesterday (Thursday).
“But, amazingly enough, I actually controlled the ball really well.
“Obviously, I just didn’t make any putts but I still hit some pretty good shots overall.
“I was happy with my ball striking. I didn’t get it around the hole, but I had my wedges and nine irons in my hands. I just didn’t get it to those eight to 12 footers.
“I seemed to be in that 15 to 20-foot range today and just wasn’t able to convert them,” added Moore, who finished ninth in the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas on last week.
Nevertheless, Moore is looking forward to the weekend play.
“It’s hard sometimes ... when you feel you should get a really low score,” Moore said.
“But, at the same time, if I had just shot five-under, four-under, and I was somewhere near the lead or tied for the lead, I’d be happy right now.
“I have to look at it that way. I’m not nine-under but I’m at or near the lead going into the weekend depending obviously on what happened to a couple guys the last few holes.
“But I’m in a great spot, obviously, enjoying the course and playing well.”
