KUALA LUMPUR: It goes without saying the PGA Tour is the ultimate competition for pro golfers around the world – and, for Nicholas Fung, the dream is no different.
The 23-year-old boldly aspires to become the first Malaysian to play on the Tour.
And this week’s CIMB Classic presents the perfect way for Nicholas to get himself into the big league, with the winner earning a two-year exemption to join the PGA Tour and a chance to play in the US Masters.
“Hopefully, I can win this one, and then I can be the first Malaysian to play on the PGA Tour ... that’s my target,” said Nicholas.
“I’m happy to play with all the PGA pros here, and of course I’m looking forward to playing well here, and going for a win. But, I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself. I just want to have fun and hopefully I will finish as low as I can.”
With a star-studded field including the likes of world No. 3 Phil Mickelson and Spaniard Sergio Garcia at the US$7mil (RM22.4mil) CIMB Classic, the Sabahan is relishing the fact that he’ll get to play among such a cast, but more so current Masters champion Bubba Watson and Rickie Fowler.
“It would mean a lot to me to be able to play against them. I can see how they play and I can learn from them. Bubba Watson hits a bombing driver and it would be nice to see how he does it.
“I played with Rickie during our amateur days, so it would be nice to catch up with him as well and chat with him about life on Tour,” said Nicholas, who tees off with Cameron Tringale of the US and Englishman David Lynn on the first flight of the front nine at 7.30am on Thursday.
Nicholas claimed his maiden Asian Development Tour (ADT) title in June when he emerged champion at the PGM-UMW Templer Park Masters. In the ADT this year, he amassed five top-10 finishes – PGM Northport Glenmarie Masters (second), PGM Maybank Johor Masters (fourth), PGM LADA Langkawi Masters (tied eighth), PGM UMW Sabah Classic (fourth) and PGM MNRB Sarawak Masters (second).
So, it’s no wonder that the PGATour.com has selected him as one of their sleeper picks for the title on Sunday along with John Huh, Daniel Summerhays, Anirban Lahiri and Chris Kirk.
And if he gets his putting game right, who’s to say it won’t happen.
