Bo van Pelt is unfazed by the weather or the KLGCC course. He's back in Malaysia for another go at winning the CIMB Classic.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC) is famous for being a tough course to master.
And with the sometimes unforgiving weather – what with the heat and humidity and, let’s not forget, rain – the CIMB Classic will make for an interesting four rounds of golf when it tees off on Thursday.
But the heat won’t be an issue for Oklahoma native and 2011 winner Bo Van Pelt.
“I live in Oklahoma ... it gets pretty hot in the summer there, so it wasn’t that big a stretch for me to deal with humidity and this amount of sunshine. So, you just drink lots of water and take your time and listen to your body …. Everybody will get through it,” he said on Tuesday.
“Also, I think if you look at the strength of the field this week, a lot of guys came over. They’ve heard this is a great event the last couple of years, and I think that’s why you see the strength of the field.”
The American is back in Malaysia for another stab at the title. He came close to retaining the crown last year, but finished joint second with Robert Garrigus behind eventual winner and fellow American Nick Watney, who won by a one-stroke margin.
However, that was when the tournament was held at the Mines Resort (just as it was in 2010 and 2011) and the KLGCC is a whole new different ball game. But Van Pelt remains unfazed.
Having played a few holes at the KLGCC course, Van Pelt seems to have it figured out.
“It looks like you need to drive the ball well. The course looks tight off the tee where you can definitely get penalised if you go off line,” he said.
“It looks like uphill and downhill there is a lot of change of elevation. So, it’s going to be critical to try to get the distance right, which will be a challenge for everybody this week.”
